THE PLIGHT OF THE EXTREME POOR

Poverty is a lack of money, but also a lack of choice and ultimately a lack of hope. With no government assistance like in developed countries, poor families lack essential resources for a basic living standard.

To understand why families can't afford school fees, we must understand the extent of the poverty in which our families live. The majority of our communities live in 'extreme poverty, defined by the World Bank as living on less than $1.90/day.

EXTREME POVERTY'S IMPACT ON FAMILIES WE SERVE

  • HOUSING: The average family has 6 members & lives in a small 1 to 3 room home constructed of mud bricks and thatched roofs.
  • EMPLOYMENT: Most families rent so they can't farm their food; those with land generally do not cultivate enough to sell. Industrial work is non-existent. Street vending is common but there is not enough work to sustain the population.
  • FOOD: Families struggle to eat even 1 meal a day, access to meat & vegetables is rare, & malnutrition is common. Typical food includes wheat or maize & beans.
  • UTILITIES:  Families have no electricity & travel miles to access water that requires boiling to drink. They dig pit latrines & use buckets to shower.
  • HEALTHCARE: Without money there is no healthcare, even for preventable diseases like malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea. Many communities have no clinic causing people to walk miles to find only basic care since clinics can't provide labs, x-rays, etc. Many die needlessly, especially children with mortality rates 7 times higher than in the U.S.
  • EDUCATION: Parents are mostly illiterate like generations before. Most communities have no school so, if they can afford the fees, many children walk miles each way.  No money for school fees means no education and the poverty cycle continues.
